๐ธ How to Plan Your Wedding Dress Shopping Trip in Kansas City
Hey beautiful! If you’re reading this, you’re probably deep in the dreamy chaos of wedding planning — and somewhere between Pinterest boards and venue tours, you’ve realized it’s time to find your dress ๐
Before you start booking appointments left and right, take a deep breath. As someone who’s helped hundreds of Kansas City brides find the dress (and been on the other side as a seamstress, too!), I’ve learned what makes or breaks the experience.
So here’s your no-fluff, big-sister guide to wedding dress shopping like a pro ~ and keeping your sanity while you do it!
๐ 1. Don’t overwhelm yourself
You only have so much energetic capacity for dress shopping. It’s exciting, but it’s also emotional — and decision fatigue is real.
My advice: Visit 1 to 3 bridal shops max. NO MORE THAN 2 per day!
That’s truly all you need to find your dream gown if you go in with intention.
Even if you are from out of town and wanting to pack it in, I promise that more than 2 per day is JUST TOO MUCH!
Want to know the WORST bridal appointment we have ever had? The bride had been 9 places- that is right, EVERY SINGLE STORE in KC... without discernment if each one would actually be a good fit for her.
She was hangry, overstimulated, and could no longer differentiate between what she likes and didn't any longer... due to decision fatigue.
Do not let this be you- plan WISELY!
๐ต๏ธโ๏ธ 2. Research and vet each bridal shop
Every Kansas City bridal boutique has its own vibe — so make sure the energy matches yours! Ask yourself:
โจ Do their values align with yours?
If inclusivity matters to you (and it should!), look at their social media and website.
-
Do they show real brides of all shapes and colors?
-
Or is it all tall, size-2 models in golden-hour lighting?
If you’re a plus-size bride and don’t see anyone who looks like you represented — run. ๐ฉ
Listen, I have been a bridal seamstress in Kansas City for over 20 years. Brides would show me pics of a dress they bought for their size 20 self, but shoved into a size 10 sample...
Yea, sorry babe. Nothing alterations wise is going to make the front of that dress look like the sample, the proportions are just DIFFERENT in your size, and them shove you into one that much too small was unethical and misleading. There, I said it!
I saw so many brides come in frustrated because they’d tried on gowns with size extenders or clips holding the back together. One girl once showed me a photo of a gown that “looked perfect” when it was clipped on her size-10 friend’s body — but she was a size 22. Um... The proportions were completely different! ๐ฉ
That’s not her fault — that’s bad service and unfair to actual plus-szed bodies to compare to stock photo, a photo of it on someone else, or of a sample that is wayyy too small.
LESSON~ Never let anyone shove you into a gown that doesn’t actually fit your frame. It’s unfair and bound to have you think that it would be the same in your actual size when it fit correctly.
๐ Ask directly: “How many gowns do you have in my size to try on?”
If they can’t say at least 5+, move on to the next shop.
๐ 3. Make sure you’re represented
If you’re a bride of color, take note of how a shop represents diversity. Are their stylists culturally aware? Do you see yourself reflected on their website?
Representation matters. Black Lives Matter.
Just because the designers may not have stock photos of people or color, that is NO EXCUSE for not going out ot your way to feature them in photo-shoots, editorials, and on your social feeds. Bridal shops- there are too many out there with NO DIVERSITY shown, and that is SIMPLY NOT OK.
Brides- and you deserve to feel seen the moment you walk in.

โฐ 4. Be realistic about your time
We all have busy lives! If you’re planning your wedding around work, travel, or kids, you don’t have time to drive around to five shops hoping for magic.
๐ก Pro tip:
Before booking anywhere, scroll their website and look at the actual gowns in stock.
A lot of boutiques just post designer lookbooks ~ which can trick you into thinking they have something they don’t.
At High Vibe Bride, you can browse our real, current inventory by size before you even book your appointment.
(Game changer.)
๐ธ 5. Research by budget
If a store doesn’t list prices online, they’re probably a luxury boutique. That’s not a bad thing — but if your budget is under $2,000, you’ll want to shop smart.
At High Vibe Bride, every single gown is under $2,000, with most around $1,000.
Most of our brides find that $800 is a great range to explore different styles without feeling limited. We have a special sample-sale gown space we are happy to book you in to help accomidate your budget.
We’ll talk honestly with you about what’s realistic within your budget during your Discovery Call.

๐ 6. Ask about off-the-rack options
If your wedding is coming up in less than six months, make sure to ask whether a store has ready-to-take-home gowns. Many bridal boutiques only do special orders, which can take 6–9 months. More about how special orders work.
Our Sample Room specializes in off-the-rack gowns that you can take home today ~ perfect for short timelines or budget-conscious babes.

๐ 7. Prep your outfit for success
Let’s talk underwear! ๐
Bring nude high-waisted panties or shapewear so you get a smooth fit and great photos.
I can’t tell you how many appointments have been derailed by dark or bulky undies showing through every gown. And please ~ don’t fall for the TikTok trend about wearing black panties “to check if the dress is sheer.” It’ll just make your photos look silly.
No bras as needed, as dresses have built-in support!
If you want to wear a backless strapless stick-on type bra, here is a link. It can provide oomph without adding weird strap lines.
You’re going to want cute mirror selfies, trust me! ๐ธ
๐ซ 8. Have a plan ~ but stay open to magic!
This is so important.
Tell your stylist the vibe you want to feel rather than the exact details.
For example:
“I want to feel beautiful, whimsical, and light for my outdoor ceremony.”
That gives your stylist creative freedom to pull options that might surprise you!
Just the other day, I had a bride who swore she hated sweetheart necklines. Wouldn’t even try one on. But after I gently convinced her to keep an open mind, guess what? The gown she fell in love with — and said yes to — had the most perfect sweetheart neckline! ๐
Moral of the story: stay curious. The right dress will surprise you in the best way.
๐ 9. Who to Bring (and who not to)
Okay, real talk — this one can make or break your whole experience.
We recommend bringing no more than 3 loved ones.
That might be your mom, your maid of honor, your bestie ~ or anyone who truly “gets” you.
๐ฌ Too many opinions = too many cooks in the kitchen.
You want people who will support your vision, not confuse you with theirs.
โจ Choose guests who are:
-
Kind-hearted and emotionally grounded
-
Supportive and body-positive
-
Able to focus on you, not themselves
-
Capable of holding space for your moment
And babe ~ this is not an occasion for kiddos. ๐ถ
They deserve your full attention (and snacks and playtime!), but you deserve this sacred little window of focus on yourself.
Let your bridal shopping day be calm, present, and full of “you energy.” ๐
